Gabriel Mamedov scored two, third period powerplay goals to help lead the Whalers Premier team to a 5 – 2 win over the visiting Hershey Cubs last night. The win clinch’s a playoff spot for team in their first year of existence.
The Cubs took an early 1 – 0 lead when Owen Dell scored his ninth goal of the season just nineteen seconds into the game.
Hershey doubled their lead with 8:22 left in the opening period when Kyle Ziemba scored a powerplay goal for his fourth tally of the season.
The Whalers then scored five unanswered goals.
Thirty seconds after Hershey took a two-goal lead, Maxime Rolland scored his eighth goal of the season to cut the Whalers deficit in half. Michael Campbell’s eighth goal on the season as well tied the game with seven seconds remaining in the opening period. It was the Whalers first of three powerplay goals on the evening.
Mamedov scored his first of the game just 2:32 into the third period to give the Whalers their first lead of the game. A minute later Mamedov doubled the Whalers lead. Max Maziarchuk scored an empty net goal with 1:07 left in the game to close out the scoring.
Klimenti Rachkauskas had three points (all assists), Yakov Yakzhin had two points (both assists) and Maziarchuk had two points (goal and assist).
Justin Grenon stopped 20 of 22 shots in the win while the Cubs’ Ty Morton turned aside 41 of 45. Click here for the box score.
The Whalers have two games remaining in the regular season. They will play their last home game today at 3:00 PM against the PAL Jr. Islanders, and they will finish the regular season on the road against the Connecticut Jr. Rangers on Saturday, February 26 at 5:45PM.
